Car Audio Upgrades: Where to Begin? -Part 1

Head Unit or Subwoofer

Want to improve your car’s sound system? Don’t know where to start?

Look no further.

I recommend starting with either a new stereo or a powered subwoofer.

If you have a newer vehicle with a stereo that has integrated heating/cooling controls, navigation, or any other kind of security/safety system, then your best bet is likely retaining the stereo and upgrading with a solid subwoofer. In this case, a Rockford Fosgate P300-10 or 12, Infinity Basslink, JL Audio Microsub, or other kind of reputable subwoofer maker is great. A powered system with a sub and amplifier included together would be a great first choice. Be sure to get the appropriate size OFC copper wiring kit to match the sub setup!

Installing a subwoofer, even a lower power 150-300 watts RMS sub, increases the bass on a stock stereo system immensely! By improving the lows this increases the dynamic range of the sound so the highs sound better, too.

If you can upgrade your stereo without adapter issues, then I would recommend a head unit upgrade first. Upgrading to an aftermarket head unit gives you a clean source for your sound and a moderate power upgrade since the integrated amp in the new stereo is usually more powerful than the stock system.

A head unit upgrade will give much cleaner and louder sound than the stock system.

Head unit or subwoofer, what if I want both? If your pocketbook and install skills can handle it, then get both! Cleaner and more powerful sound, and a boost to the bottom end are awesome ways to get better sound!
